In postwar Munich, thousands of polio survivors needed somewhere to heal — and then somewhere to go. Stiftung Pfennigparade began as a rehabilitation clinic and kept asking one question that most clinics didn't: what happens after? The answer, built over seven decades, is a cluster of real businesses — IT, printing, catering, a café-bookshop in Schwabing — where more than 2,500 people now work, most with severe physical disabilities. VATES runs the annual Supported Employment Day to convene employers, policymakers and disabled jobseekers, and publishes the Finnish job-coach competence framework.

A decade on, Nicolas Neumann — hired in Buenos Aires in 2016 before finishing high school — built an invoice automation tool that cut a 3-day manual process to 20 minutes, and won SAP's highest employee innovation prize at 21.

Scope is one of Britain's largest disability charities. A few years ago it asked itself an honest question: are we actually a good employer for disabled people? The answer was uncomfortable. Job descriptions had unnecessary requirements. Interview formats assumed everyone communicates the same way. Hiring managers carried the same biases they'd spent years campaigning against. Scope redesigned their recruitment from scratch, stripped out artificial barriers, retrained interviewers, and launched Work With Me with Virgin Media — a public campaign asking employers to appoint a senior leader accountable for disability inclusion.

IEFP (Instituto do Emprego e Formação Profissional) manages Portugal's Supported Employment programme for people with disabilities, operating through 87 Employment Centres nationwide. Employers who hire disabled workers receive wage subsidies of up to 75% of the national minimum wage for up to three years, plus grants for workplace adaptations. IEFP also funds vocational training in specialist rehabilitation centres (Centros de Reabilitação Profissional) and runs the Contrato de Emprego Apoiado scheme, which has placed thousands of workers in sheltered and open-market jobs since its inception.
